GLP-1 Before Pregnancy: When to Stop Before Conception

If you are planning a pregnancy while taking a GLP-1 medication (semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound), the general guidance is to stop it before you try to conceive. This guide explains the timing and what to do instead. It is educational and is not medical advice; your clinician can give you a plan for your medication.

Why stop a GLP-1 before pregnancy?

GLP-1 medications are not recommended in pregnancy because there is not enough human safety data, and animal studies raised concerns at high doses. Planning ahead lets you switch to a pregnancy-appropriate plan for blood sugar or weight before you conceive, rather than stopping suddenly after a positive test.

How long before trying to conceive?

Because semaglutide has a long half-life of about a week, its labeling suggests stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Other GLP-1 medications differ. Ask your clinician for the exact timing for your medication so the drug has cleared before you start trying.

What to do instead

Your clinician may move you to options with a longer track record in pregnancy, focus on nutrition and activity, and, if you have diabetes, use insulin, which is well studied in pregnancy. A preconception visit is a good time to review folic acid, blood pressure, thyroid, and any other medications.

Frequently asked questions

How long before pregnancy should I stop Ozempic?
Labeling for semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) suggests stopping at least two months before a planned pregnancy because of its long half-life. Confirm the timing with your clinician.
Can I get pregnant while taking a GLP-1?
It is possible, but GLP-1 medications are not recommended in pregnancy. If you are trying to conceive, plan with your clinician to stop beforehand. If you become pregnant unexpectedly while taking one, contact your clinician.
Can I use a GLP-1 to lose weight before pregnancy?
Some people use GLP-1 medications before pregnancy under a clinician's care, but they must be stopped before conception. Talk to your clinician about timing and a safe transition plan.
