GLP-1 Medications and Pregnancy: What Is Safe?
GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound) are not recommended during pregnancy. Human safety data are limited, and current guidance is to stop these medications before trying to conceive. This guide explains what the evidence says and what to do next. It is educational and is not medical advice; talk to your clinician about your situation.
Are GLP-1 medications safe in pregnancy?
No major guideline recommends GLP-1 medications in pregnancy. There is not enough human safety data, and animal studies raised concerns at high doses. The FDA labeling for these drugs advises stopping them when pregnancy is recognized. If you are planning a pregnancy, talk with your clinician about a safer plan for blood sugar or weight before you conceive.
How long before pregnancy should I stop?
Because semaglutide has a long half-life (about a week), labeling suggests stopping it at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Other GLP-1 medications vary. Your clinician can give you the exact timing for your medication and help you transition to an option that is appropriate while trying to conceive.
What if I got pregnant while taking a GLP-1?
Do not panic, and do not stop any other essential medication on your own. Contact your clinician as soon as you can. Many people have healthy pregnancies after an unplanned exposure. Your care team will review your medications, your blood sugar, and your nutrition, and make a plan with you.
GLP-1, gestational diabetes, and nutrition
In pregnancy, blood sugar is usually managed with nutrition, monitoring, and, when needed, insulin, which has a long track record in pregnancy. Materna provides bilingual gestational-diabetes care with dietitian-led meal planning and glucose tracking, so you have support whether or not a GLP-1 was part of your story before pregnancy.
GLP-1 and breastfeeding
There is limited data on GLP-1 medications during breastfeeding, so most clinicians advise caution and a shared decision. If you are nursing or planning to, ask your clinician before starting or restarting one.
Materna provides maternal and women's health care and education. Materna does not prescribe GLP-1 medications. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation.
