How Materna works
The Mommy Passport: one pregnancy record that follows you
May 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Most pregnancy records live in pieces: a folder at one clinic, a fax at another, a result that never made it across town. The Mommy Passport is our answer to that, a single record that belongs to you and travels on the one device you never forget.
What the Mommy Passport is
The Mommy Passport is the patient side of Materna Health Solutions: your own, patient-owned pregnancy and postpartum record. It holds your visits, vitals, medications, symptoms, screenings, and notes in one place, in English or Spanish, on your phone. It is free for patients, always.
Why a record that travels matters
More than 80 percent of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States are preventable (CDC Maternal Mortality Review Committees). A large share of the gaps trace back to one thing: fragmented data. The clinician on one side of a handoff cannot see what the last one wrote. A record that travels with you closes that gap, so every provider you see starts with your full history instead of a blank page.
Built for the border, in your language
Along the US-Mexico border, pregnancies routinely cross between two health systems and lose continuity at every step. The Mommy Passport is Spanish-first and bilingual, and it can export your record in a standard format (FHIR R4) so it can move with you across clinics and across the border.
Voice-first, because tired hands do not type
You can log a symptom, a blood pressure reading, or how you are feeling just by talking. The same gentle check-in works in English or Spanish, and concerning values get flagged so nothing important waits until your next appointment.
What it does not do
The Mommy Passport does not replace your clinician, and Materna does not make claims it cannot back with data. It is a tool to keep your record together, catch what is treatable earlier, and make your care easier to carry. Anything urgent still means calling your provider or, for an emergency, 911.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the Mommy Passport cost anything?
- No. The patient app is free for patients, always. Materna is paid by the health systems and partners that bear the cost of risk, not by you.
- Is my information private?
- Yes. Materna is built to be HIPAA-aligned, and your record is yours. You control what is shared and with whom.
- Do I need a smartphone?
- The Mommy Passport runs on the phone you already have, in a browser or as an app, in English or Spanish.
