Hyperemesis Gravidarum: Severe Nausea in Pregnancy
Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, well beyond typical morning sickness, and it can lead to dehydration and weight loss. It is treatable, and you do not have to tough it out. This page explains the signs and how Materna helps, in Spanish and English. It is educational, not medical advice.
Call or go in if you
- Cannot keep any fluids down for more than a day
- Have signs of dehydration: little or dark urine, dizziness, a racing heart
- Are losing weight, or vomiting blood
- Feel too weak to care for yourself
These can mean you need fluids and treatment. Call your clinician or go in.
What is hyperemesis gravidarum?
It is severe, persistent nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that interferes with eating, drinking, and daily life. Unlike typical morning sickness, it can cause dehydration, weight loss, and electrolyte problems that need treatment.
How it is managed
Care can include anti-nausea medications that are used in pregnancy, fluids, vitamin support, and small, frequent bland foods. Some people need IV fluids. The goal is to keep you hydrated and nourished.
How Materna helps
Materna makes a bilingual nurse line one tap away, tracks your hydration and symptoms, and escalates quickly when you need fluids or a visit. Spanish-first and Medicaid-friendly.
